Ingonish

Arrival strip

Where the highlands finally let go.

From Pleasant Bay, the road climbs over the park’s northern highlands before descending toward the Atlantic at Ingonish. From Baddeck via Cape Smokey, the approach is shorter but still climbs a real headland just before arrival.

Field note 01 / South Bay

A beach with the ocean’s edge taken off.

Ingonish Beach sits in South Bay, partly sheltered from the open Atlantic swell, which makes it one of the more swimmable and family-friendly stops on the loop, with a supervised freshwater side as well as the ocean beach. The area is also a genuine, if modest, surf spot on the right day. The historic Keltic Lodge, with its pool, spa, and the Highland Links golf course, sits on the headland above.

Field note 02 / Middle Head

A narrow peninsula between two bays.

The Middle Head Trail begins just beyond the Keltic Lodge and follows a narrow, forested peninsula separating Ingonish’s two bays, ending on open cliffs with views toward Cape Smokey and Ingonish Island. It is a 5.3 km loop, generally taking one to two hours, with mostly level walking, some rocky and root-crossed sections, and recent interpretive panels covering Mi’kmaq history connected to the site.

Before you go

The trail is manageable for most fitness levels but has real exposure at the cliff end — keep children and pets close, and check current trail-status notices with Parks Canada.
